Pop-up showers and storms to begin June
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The first day of June begins with a summer-like weather pattern. Storms and showers will flare up during the afternoon, mostly starting around 2:00 and 3:00. Daytime heating and CAPE (convective available potential energy, and expect to hear that term a lot during the summer) will spur up storms, some of which may be severe. It’s a marginal chance for severe weather, however. That means while I expect a few severe storms in the Peach State, most of the storms will be your normal late spring storms (lightning, some high wind gusts, that sort of thing).
What makes a severe thunderstorm different is it contains at least one of the following: winds greater than 57.5 mph, hail at least an inch in diameter, or a tornado. For any severe storms this week, I want you to remove the word ‘tornado’ from your vocabulary as we are not forecasting anything like that. The main concern for any severe storm that forms through Wednesday will be high wind.
Later this week, temperatures are expecting to rise to the upper 80s and low 90s, and the chance of rain will decrease. We’ll see how the models play out as we get closer to the weekend, but it does look currently like the rain chances will dip.
