Pollen Count Not Rising, Still Concerns in Middle Georgia

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Middle Georgia seems to be under a blanket of yellow powder. And with all that pollen comes sneezing, wheezing, and a whole slew of annoying allergies.

According to the Allergy & Asthma Clinic of Macon, the pollen count in Middle Georgia hasn’t gone up, but there is still a concern.

Dr. David Plaxico says the community shouldn’t be concerned with the pollen. He tells 41NBC the pollen count is the same in comparison to other cities in Georgia, but its higher than some areas in the state because of the warmer weather and less rain. He says people have concerns about what to do if their allergies flare up.

“It’s always good to try and be indoors when the there’s a lot of pollen, and that’s usually midday or afternoon, but if you’re out and about and you are going from your home to your car, keep the windows up and if you’re out at work, you want to treat yourself with allergy medicine over the counter,” Plaxico said.

Plaxico says he started finding pollen in January, which is considered a winter month. He believes we have more exposure to pollen and other allergens because the winter months are shorter and the weather stays mild as opposed to cold. The mild weather allows pollen to arrive earlier than expected.

He expects the high pollen count to continue until June and then resume again in the later part of the year.
