MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The first designs for the proposed new Macon-Bibb Senior Citizens’ Center were unveiled on Wednesday.

If the phrase don’t judge a book by its cover applies at the site of the proposed center.

“Now is the time to build and I believe we are ready to go,” Leroy Thomas Sr., a senior, said.

Macon-Bibb seniors are ready to turn the page.

“When I go over there, I want to be able to enjoy the atmosphere and I think it’s really great,” Barbara Palmer, another senior, said.

Dented, rusted, and barely visible — the old DMV in Central City Park is the proposed site for the new senior center.

“What we’ve done is we’ve developed the design using that DMV and we could do in the building that would have the programs they wanted and how we could take advantage of the yard space around the building,” lead architect Bruce Morris said.

He’s including seniors on every square foot of his design plan — from game room to kitchen.

“We’ve been given a budget and so we are designing the building to meet that budget,” Morris said.

“All the facilities and amenities that he has in this presentation, I’m quite sure we’ll be happy with it,” said Thomas.

First sketches show multipurpose space, a lounge, even areas for pottery and painting.

“I think it’s really great that we’re getting a new facility so that the seniors can enjoy and relax. I’m a senior too, but I’m still busy outside of the center,” Palmer said.

The next chapter in a series of steps for a new center.

“We have come a long way and now it’s time to build something,” Thomas said.

The county has $2.5 million budgeted for the project. The senior citizens’ plans will go in front of commissioners’ committee on November 10th.
