Piedmont Macon Welcomes New Mobile Pet/ct Scanner

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Piedmont Macon now has a new mobile PET/CT scanner, offering early and accurate detection of cancer.

According to Piedmont Macon Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Gary Bernstein, the scan records a different part of the patient’s body, while providing a complete picture of the cancer’s location, size and shape.

It actually highlights tissues that are rapidly dividing and have a lot of metabolisms. It’s very useful in both a diagnosis and the treatment of cancer patients. So, were very excited to have this additional capability here in Macon, said Doctor Bernstein.

He explains how important this new device is when it comes to fighting the disease.

We’re looking for areas of the body where the cell is rapidly divided, and most people understand that one of the hallmarks of cancer. Is that the cell is growing faster, than there surrounding neighbors? So the pet scan helps highlight where they are,” he said.Helps detect the original cancer as well as monitor patients during treatment.

Doctor Bernstien says the new technology was much needed with cancer being more common today.

Cancer is a very important disease these days, and this is just a part of the comprehensive care of cancer patients as they go through their journey, shared Doctor Bernstein.

With how quickly the disease can spread, he says it’s important for patients to have access to this kind of technology.

It’s great to be able to get a scan in a convent location, close to home, and also not having to wait too long to get the scan. Weeks matter when you’re talking about cancer treatment. So it’s very important that patients have quick access to this technology, said Doctor Bernstein.
