Piedmont Macon encourages time for self-care during the holiday season

Recreation therapist at Piedmont Macon Rehab, Tracey Gift, says people need to care for themselves physically, mentally and emotionally.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Piedmont Macon is encouraging people to take time for self-care during the holiday season.

Recreation therapist at Piedmont Macon Rehab, Tracey Gift, says people need to care for themselves physically, mentally and emotionally.

Gift recommends people take a daily walk for 10 minutes.

“Put your phone in your pocket and see what’s around you,” says Gift. “Feel what’s around you, listen to what’s around you and just take a 10-minute brisk walk, slow walk, it doesn’t matter.”

Gift also recommends getting enough sleep during the holiday and turning your phone off for bedtime to help prioritize your physical health.

When prioritizing emotionally for the holidays, Gift offers the following recommendations:

  1. Plan ahead
  2. Prioritize

Gift adds that it’s not about the cash spent on a gift, but the time spent with others. She adds that establishing boundaries is healthy for the holiday season.

“It’s very important to be social, because it makes us happy,” says Gift. ” When we’re social we can volunteer for those that are less fortunate. When we are with anyone we should put our phone down, make eye contact, we should engage with the person.”

Gift says it is important to show gratitude this holiday season and to be gracious.
