Phoenix Would Welcome IndyCar Back In 2013

PHOENIX, AZ – The president of Phoenix International Raceway says he’s interested in having the IndyCar Series return to the track.

Bryan Sperber says it is too late to get an IndyCar race at Phoenix for 2012. But he’s interested in talking to series officials about the 2013 schedule.

Phoenix hosted IndyCar races from 1996 through 2005. It also hosted USAC and CART from 1964 through 1995.

Sperber says he couldn’t move forward on an IndyCar race without the series doing extensive testing to make sure its car is compatible with the track’s new configuration. The track was altered over the summer and is now a mile progressive banked tri-oval.

IndyCar is in need of venues, and said Thursday it won’t return to Las Vegas Motor Speedway next season.
