Person detained in disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother as FBI releases doorbell video

Authorities have detained a person for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie

(CNN)- Authorities have detained a person for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation.

The individual was detained during a traffic stop about an hour south of Tucson. Officials stress the person has not been charged with a crime.

The development comes just hours after the FBI released doorbell camera footage from outside Nancy Guthrie’s home taken the night she disappeared. The video shows a masked, armed person wearing a backpack standing at the front door.

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe described the questioning process as “a very delicate process,” explaining investigators will likely use a “low-intensity rapport-building approach” before pressing for details.

“They’re going to be very kind of low-intensity rapport-building approach. Eventually they’re going to get to asking details,” McCabe said.

Law enforcement officials also executed a search warrant at a home and searched a vehicle in Rio Rico, Arizona — roughly 60 miles south of Tucson near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the person detained is the same individual seen in the surveillance footage. However, experts say investigators are likely to confront the person with the images during questioning.

“Eventually they will confront him with images of that person on the porch,” McCabe added.

The FBI says there was an uptick in tips and calls to law enforcement after the doorbell footage was released. Investigators have not provided additional details about the timeline of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance or potential motives.

The investigation remains ongoing.
