Perry High School Senior Shows Off Champion Steer

For the past three years, Perry High School senior Christine Sanders has been presenting steers in cattle shows.

In August Sanders was presented the Champion Limousin Steer at the Georgia Young Farmers Association Cattle Show.

“It’s a lot harder than it looks,” says Sanders.

Sanders spends at least an hour everyday caring for her steer, Jack.

“We’ll wash them and blow dry them, clean out the pen, you feed them hay, they need fresh water,” continues Sanders.

However, she couldn’t be more proud of her prize winning steer.

“We’ve gotten Grand Champion Limousin and two second places; we’ve only had three shows.”

Currently weighing 1100lbs, Sanders says Jack should weigh close to 1400lbs by February when he is sent to slaughter.

Sanders says, “It doesn’t bother me that much because I know where he’s going before I even get him.”

She will continue to show at cattle shows across the state and finish her show career at the Georgia Junior National Livestock Show in February. Sanders says she has met a lot of people through her experience competing in cattle shows and it’s her way of relaxing.
