Pedestrian In Bonaire Hit By Train

The Houston County Sheriff’s office is investigating a train accident that killed a pedestrian this afternoon. Authorities were on the scene for several hours collecting evidence. The accident happened at the 800 block of highway 247 in Bonaire.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 12 O’clock. According to police, 41 year old Freddie Meek Jr, was walking southbound on the railroad tracks when he was hit by a train. Police say meek was wearing earphones at the time of the accident. Lt. John Holland of the Houston County Sherriff’s Office says, he is not sure why the Meek was walking along the tracks. Investigators spoke with several witnesses on the scene to try to figure out what happened.

“He was distracted walking southbound; The train was traveling southbound and actually tried to alert him but he didn’t realize they were coming and he was struck and killed on the scene”, said Lt. Holland.

According to witnesses, it did not appear that meek saw or heard the train coming. Lt. Holland is calling this a tragic accident.
