Partial Collapse Threat Prompts Evacuations At Manhattan High Rise

(NBC)- A major emergency response unfolded in Midtown Manhattan after structural concerns raised fears that a high-rise under construction could partially collapse.

Construction workers reported buckling columns and sinking floors shortly before 8 a.m., prompting an emergency response. Video from inside the building showed bent support beams, while aerial footage appeared to show the structure leaning slightly.

The building, formerly home to Pfizer’s global headquarters, is being converted into a 1,600-unit apartment complex.

New York City officials said crews observed additional movement in one of the compromised columns after arriving at the scene, calling the situation dangerous.

More than 150 fire and EMS personnel responded as authorities evacuated nine nearby buildings around Grand Central Terminal, including schools, hotels and restaurants. A local television station also relocated its broadcast after being forced to leave its building.

City officials said there are no Department of Buildings records indicating previous structural concerns with the property.

The building’s developer said safety remains its top priority, adding the issue is confined to a small section of one of the two buildings on the site.

Emergency crews continue working to stabilize the structure, and no injuries have been reported.
