(NBC) A major shakeup at the Department of Justice as Pam Bondi is out as Attorney General.

Donald Trump announced the move, posting “we love Pam,” while saying she will transition to a new role in the private sector.

Bondi, a longtime ally of the president dating back to his first term, had recently appeared alongside him during a historic visit to the Supreme Court.

But multiple sources tell NBC News the president had grown increasingly frustrated with Bondi’s performance, particularly her handling of key investigations.

Those frustrations reportedly included a lack of progress on cases targeting Trump’s perceived political opponents, as well as inquiries tied to his disputed claims of widespread voter fraud.

Bondi also faced scrutiny over her handling of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. She previously suggested the Justice Department had access to a client list connected to Epstein, before later reversing course and stating no such list was found.

Public pressure surrounding the high-profile case continued to mount in the aftermath.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will serve as acting attorney general. Blanche, a former personal lawyer to Trump, defended the president, saying he had not tied Bondi’s departure to the Epstein matter.

Sources familiar with the situation also tell NBC News that Trump and Bondi had a heated confrontation at the White House last week, though details of that exchange remain unclear.

Bondi is now the second cabinet secretary to leave the administration in less than a month.
