Pakistani Activist For Poor Shot Dead In Karachi

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) – A police official says gunmen have shot and killed a pioneering Pakistani activist who worked in some of the poorest neighborhoods of the country’s largest city.

Senior police officer Javed Odho said Thursday that Perween Rahman was shot by gunmen on a motorcycle Wednesday night as she was returning home from the office.

He says she was struck four times in the chest and neck and died on the way to the hospital.

There was no claim of responsibility for the killing.

Rahman headed the Orangi Pilot Project which helped some of the city’s poorest communities build things like sewer and water systems.

Karachi is a sprawling city of roughly 18 million people where many of the city’s poor live in makeshift communities that have almost no government services.
