Painted Rocks Are Taking Over The Town
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A scavenger hunt for painted rocks is now in Macon.
Cheryl Stratigos is the creator of Macon Georgia Rocks. It’s a new hobby that encourages families to explore town by searching for, finding, and re-hiding painted rocks.
“It’s just a lot of fun and to me it’s relaxing, painting the rocks and it’s fun when people post their child found a rock and they post a picture of their child,” Stratigos said. “The kids look so happy and it makes me feel happy.”
She got this idea from her family and friends in Columbus, Georgia.
“In Columbus Georgia, they have over 16,000 members, so I thought well Macon rocks, why can’t we start one here,” Stratigos said.
To participate in the hunt, all you have to do is paint a rock, pick a place to hide it, and then post a clue on the facebook page for the next person to find it.
“I’ve gotten so much positive feedback. People say their families enjoy it so much that now I’ve got several small businesses that have gotten involved,” Stratigos said.
Southern Grace Creations is one of the businesses that plans on hosting a paint party Saturday for kids to paint rocks.
Worker Angel Hemmings said the owner’s granddaughter fell in love with the painted rocks because of their creativity.
“It is, you know, like master minding. You know at Southern Grace they create shirts, they do monograms,” Hemmings said. “It is just a clever way to express yourself and you know every rock you see, it’s an expression.”
Stratigos said she has no plans to stop Macon Georgia Rocks anytime soon, partly because of good ol’ competition.
“I want to beat Columbus, I want to get 17,000 and just keep growing.”
The paint party will be at Southern Grace Creation at 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Kids ages 4-10 are welcomed with a parent or legal guardian.
