Over 40 runners help fill backpacks for hungry children
The money from the 6K fundraiser will go to the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank Backpack Program. Organizers are hoping to raise at least $3,000.
More than 2,800 backpacks are filled with nutritious food for children every week, says community food bank Executive Director, Ronald Raleigh.
“If they haven’t had anything to eat over the weekend they’re waiting for that free or reduced lunch program that they’re involved in, in school,” explains Raleigh. “They’re thinking about food, they’re thinking about their stomachs. They’re not thinking about learning.”
A couple of familiar faces were in the crowd of award recipients, including Bibb County Sheriff David Davis and 41NBC’s Chris Simmons.
“I came in third in my age group,” says Bibb County Sheriff David Davis. “So, I guess I did alright. But the main thing was to participate and finish.”
“I came out here and ran with my wife, my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law and little one. He decided he was going to power the stroller today with the wife.”
