MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Open Streets Macon is back this weekend, celebrating its tenth anniversary.

The event, hosted by Bike Walk Macon, will connect community members and families that make up the Pleasant Hill, Tatnall Heights and Beall’s Hill communities. Traffic will be closed off to a 1.4-mile stretch along Monroe, Tatnall and Oglethorpe Streets as part of Bike Walk Macon’s efforts to help the community envision car-free streets that are walk and bike friendly.

Dsto Moore, a Pleasant Hill Neighborhood champion for Bike Walk Macon, says the event is an opportunity for the community to regain the connectedness he remembers when growing up.

“I believe opportunities like this, Open Streets, it brings the tight-knit community back, and all the other neighborhoods as well,” Moore said. “So, bikes, walking, you can skate, just be creative. You can draw in the streets with chalk. Whatever you want to do man, it’s all about community and it’s all about connections.”

Moore calls for the Pleasant Hill, Tatnall Heights, and Beall’s Hill communities to come together not just on Sunday, but throughout the year. He says together, east Macon can work together to change the public’s perception of the area and its youth.

“Some people might see the blight and everything, but I see love and peace,” Moore said. “It’s some great people that live in this neighborhood. Hopefully the people come out this Sunday and show what the neighborhood has to offer.”

The event lasts from 2 to 6 p.m. this Sunday.
