Old Tubman Museum transforms into Macon music studio
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The old Tubman Museum in Macon is now a place where Middle Georgia musicians can jump start their careers.
The 5/4 Music Space on Walnut Street is giving young artists opportunity.
“A long time ago, you used to have to drive like 15, 20, 30 minutes to get to your band member’s house. You had to load up all your equipment and you’re bothering your parents. Well, we’ve solved that problem,” said 5/4 Music Space Co-Founder George Murray II.
Bands can rent a room in the new studio which gives them a chance to work alongside other artists, but there’s also privacy.
“Everyone is isolated. There’s only one way in and one way out of your room because the bands actually keep their equipment here,” explained Murray.
Musicians can throw their own concerts in an event space upstairs to help pay their room rent.
“We provide the sound. We provide an engineer to run the session, all the microphones and they keep every dime that they make,” said Murray.
The 5/4 Management Group is also working with the team that’s renovating Capricorn Studios.
“5/4 Management Group will be running the studio and the band rehearsal rooms. Anyone that books a year long contract here, automatically gets a spot at Capricorn when it opens,” explained Murray.
5/4 Music Space is another force pushing to bring Macon back to the musical forefront.
“We’re looking for ways to get these artists out of Macon and explore the world, tour, but also come back and call it their home,” said Murray.
There are three rooms still available in the building.
Rent ranges from $150-$250 depending on the size and location of the room.
