Old Time, 4th Event held at Jarrell Plantation Historic Site

MONROE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — In Monroe County, the Jarrell Plantation Historic Site held its annual Old Time, 4th Event on Thursday. It’s been happening at the plantation since the 1970s.

Folks of all ages got the opportunity to see first hand, the reading of the Declaration of Independence, wood stove cooking and three-legged racing events — all activities people living on the Jarrell Plantation Historic Site and in the area participated in between 1850 and 1920.

Pilar Heath and her husband attended from Jones County. She says they really enjoyed all of it.

“It’s very interesting to see what they’ve done back then,” she said. “The wells and the sugar, it’s really interesting, it’s nice,” Pilar Heath said.

Attendees also got to pet goats, watch roosters, shoot tin cans hanging from a string with a slingshot and listen to the tunes of the past.

The Assistant Manager at the Plantation, Derek Jackson says they always try to closely follow the interpretation of the original plantation’s vibe and time period.

“All the games, everything we have set up, in the tradition of what they would’ve done,” he said. “They’ve always made their own toys or their own games out of what they had around them, so we tried to maintain the spirit of that.”
