Officials offer tips to motorists ahead of Labor Day weekend
Labor Day 2024 saw 13,000 traffic citations and nearly 500 DUI arrests for drivers across the state according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Georgia State Patrol says it investigated 13 fatalities over the holiday period.

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Increased traffic means a higher risk of accidents. With millions of Americans set to travel this Labor Day, officials say safe travel is more important than ever.
According to Georgia State Patrol data, the agency investigated 13 traffic fatalities over the Labor Day holiday in 2024. By being extra cautious, they say drivers can bring that number down to zero this year.
“When people are speeding, they don’t have enough time to react when things are happening up ahead,” said Sgt. First Class Raul Mejia, Commander of Georgia State Patrol Post 44 in Forsyth. “So, it’s important for them to drive the speed limit.
Although the rules of the road will be the same, Mejia says there’ll be increased law enforcement presence over the holiday. He encourages travelers to consider others on the road and look out for those inside the vehicle.
“We encourage everyone to wear their seatbelts, especially children under 8 years old,” Mejia said. “Make sure they’re buckled in with the right child restraint or booster seat.”
To help traffic flow smoother and ease congestion, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is suspending lane closures stemming from ongoing projects. But Gina Snider, GDOT District 3 Communications Officer, says construction equipment will still be out, and so will first responders.
“Be aware that it’s still a work zone,” Snider said. ‘”When you see emergency personnel please move over, we have that move over law in the state of Georgia. Hands free, do not text and drive.”
Labor Day 2024 saw 13,000 traffic citations and nearly 500 DUI arrests for drivers across the state according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Motorists are encouraged to drive at or below the speed limit, avoid distracted driving, and most importantly, don’t drink and drive.
“Impaired drivers unfortunately cause a lot of accidents and people get hurt,” Mejia said. “And that’s what we’re trying to decrease, fatalities out here on the highways of this state.”
According to GDOT, the suspension of construction related lane closures will begin at noon tomorrow and will last until 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
