Ocmulgee Park legislation passes U.S. House of Representatives
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park Boundary Revision Act unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. and Rep. Austin Scott, would expand the Ocmulgee National Monument from 700 acres to over 2,800 acres. The name will also be changed to “Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park” to increase name recognition and gain more visitors.
The bill will go on to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
The bill is the second coming out of the House that would designate a new historical park in Georgia. The first to pass the House would identify the Martin Luther King Jr. site as a national historic park. The bill is sponsored by Atlanta Democrat John Lewis.
