Obama Announces Gun Initiatives

(NBC News) A visibly emotional President Obama announced executive actions to curb gun violence Tuesday.

The president wiped away tears as he remembered the young victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school and assured the country, and gun owners, that his actions are not intended to take away guns or diminish the second amendment.

Mr. Obama outlined his actions, starting with comprehensive background checks, regulating those who sell guns, hiring more people to process paperwork and making the system more efficient, making sure people with mental illness get help and developing new technologies to make guns safer.

“Each time this comes up we are fed the excuse that common-sense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre. Or the one before that. Or the one before that. So why bother trying? I reject that thinking,” the president said.

He also chided Congress for their inaction.”The gun lobby may be holding Congress hostage right now, but they cannot hold America hostage,” Mr. Obama added. “We do not have to accept this carnage as the price of freedom.”
