Northeast High School Beefs Up Security Inside School

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s been less than a week since a Northeast High School student told police she lied about being sexually assaulted by 7 students in the bathroom at the school. Police say there was a sexual encounter that occurred at Northeast, but the way it happened was not consistent with what she told law enforcement.

School officials tell 41NBC they’ve taken steps to make it hard for something like this to happen again. The Director of Risk Management for the Bibb County School District, David Gowan says the school district has completed an initial risk assessment analysis of Northeast High School since the incident.

Restroom access has been modified at Northeast. All teachers are to take their classes as a group to the restroom once per class period. Teachers are to stay near the restroom in the hallway and verify that all students are out of the restrooms and back in the classroom when finished. No students are to be left unattended in the classroom or anywhere else. A third campus police officer has been added to the Campus Police Unit assigned to Northeast High School.

“We want students to behave responsibly and of course we tried to take initial steps to make the situation better at Northeast High School but we would also like to encourage students obviously off campus and in their private life to behave responsibly also”, said David Gowan.

The school district is currently looking to work with an independent school safety agency to provide an outside look at risk assessment services. Gowan says he encourages the help of the community, parents, teachers, and school administrators to help prevent incidents like this from happening again.
