No Name Calling for WRMS Students
Warner Robins Middle School started a program called Sources of Strength just last year.
Principal Dr. Donald Warren says,” From time to time kids would come to the counseling office and make the statement they wanted to hurt themselves and end their lives.” He says when the school was given the opportunity to start SOS, they jumped on the initiative right away.
The program promotes overall wellness and suicide prevention. This week the middle school is holding “No Name Calling Week” and challenging students to stop hurting others with mean names.
A set of students were chosen and trained by school counselors on how to address bullying and name-callling situations. Those students visited with homeroom classrooms to share ways to stay safe if encountered by a bully.
Seventh grader Cade Loid was selected to be a peer leader. He says, “We’re really about just being there for the kids that need it. When kids want to hurt themselves,….well we’re there for them to come to.”
The purpose of the message is clear. “We are sources of strength. Our mission is to spread messages of hope, help and strength,” said the students in SOS.
The students are trained to have one-on-one conversations, make peer-to-peer presentations and create ways to spread the message of “No Name Calling” to other students.
