No. 11 GC Men’s Tennis Team Opens Conference Play with 8-1 Win
AMERICUS, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The No. 11 Georgia College men’s tennis team (3-1) just missed a third shutout Saturday against Georgia Southwestern State University (2-4), 8-1 at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex. It was the first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match for the Bobcats (1-0 PBC), while the Hurricanes fell to 0-2 in the PBC.
Georgia College entered singles play with a 3-0 lead as the Bobcats’ third doubles team of freshman Kyle Kinsler (Suwanee, Ga.) and Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) beat Abel Acuna and Darren Kenny, 8-2. Sophomore Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) and senior Alex Schubert (Frankfurt, Germany) defeated Valentin Demande and Jake Koonce, 8-3; while sophomore Taylor Powell (Martinez, Ga.) and freshman Anton Waern (Taby, Sweeden) got past Stephen Moore and Oliver Marshall, 8-5.
In singles play, two of the matches went to a third set with the Bobcats earning a split. At No. 3 singles, Powell went down to Moore after winning the first set 6-2 and then losing the final two 6-7 (3-7) and 1-0 (10-8). Schubert dropped the first set 2-6 against Koonce, but won the final two sets 6-3 and 1-0 (10-8) at second singles.
Hass was dominant in first singles winning over Demande 6-2, 6-0; and Waern beat Acuna at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2. Kinsler beat Kenny at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-2, while Campus got by Marshall 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 5 singles.
The men’s tennis team travels to No. 10 Columbus State University tomorrow Sunday, Feb. 23 for a 10 a.m. start. The match has been moved up from its original noon start due to possible rain.
