No. 11 GC Men’s Tennis Team Drops PBC Match to No. 10 Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The No. 11 Georgia College men’s tennis team (3-2, 1-1 PBC) dropped its first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match to undefeated No. 10 Columbus State University (5-0, 2-0 PBC), 6-3 Sunday at the Mary V. Blackman Center. It was the second road PBC match for the Bobcats in as many days.

Georgia College entered singles play down 2-1 as sophomore Taylor Powell (Martinez, Ga.) and freshman Anton Waern (Taby, Sweeden) were the only Bobcat pair to score for Georgia College in doubles. They beat Michael Trebuhov and Maciej Kierkus with an 8-6 score at second doubles.

Georgia College first doubles pair of sophomore Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) and senior Alex Schubert (Frankfurt, Germany) lost 8-6 to Marco Almorin and Adi Malicbegovic, and the third doubles team of freshman Kyle Kinsler (Suwanee, Ga.) and Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) were beaten 8-4 against Danilo Sardelli and Benedikt Wilde.

In singles play, Hass and Waern produced victories at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, respectively. Both split the first two sets before winning the deciding set. Hass beat Almorin 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6), while Waern won against Sardelli 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (10-2).

In the remaining four singles matches, Powell came the closest taking seven games before losing to Malicbegovic 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. At No. 2 singles, Schubert lost to Oussama Zoghlami 6-3, 6-1. Campus was also only able to capture four games against Trebuhov 6-4, 6-0 at fifth singles; while Kinsler lost 6-0, 6-1 to Wilde at the sixth spot.

The men’s tennis team travels to No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic State University Wednesday, Feb. 26 for a 1 p.m. start.
