Next phase of Second Street Corridor Connector in Macon begins
Little Richard Penniman knew a thing or two about music. On the street named after the rock and roll giant in Macon, there’s a sweet tune of construction.
“I loved the way they fixed up Little Richard Penniman. They joked since my name is Lucile, they were going to sing. The mayor was going to sing he said,” Lucile Clark, a long time resident, said.
Clark has enjoyed every sound on her street for the last year.
She’s lived in the area since the 60’s and says the next phase of the Second Street corridor is improving her neighborhood.
Mayor Robert Reichert agrees.
“We’re very enthusiastic and very excited about the progress that the Second Street Corridor initiative is having on this area,” Reichert said.
Leaders shoveled dirt on the next phase of the $1.7 million paid for by SPLOST dollars.
“This will help to link Mercer University with downtown Macon and all of the centers of economic activity in and through downtown all the way to the east side of the river and the conference center and the Marriott hotel and beyond,” Reichert said.
During construction, crews will improve the storm drainage system, install a water line to serve Navicent Health, and install lighting and sidewalks.
“It’s very important to Macon-Bibb County and to the entire region. As I say this will create a new gateway entrance into the downtown area from the south and the west,” Reichert said.
Lucile is ready to see the changes, and can’t wait to sing the city’s praises.
“I feel happy. I hope I live to see it. I’m just 81. I hope I live to see it,” she said.
Mayor Reichert says he expects the project to be completed by November 2016.
