Newest Section of Ocmulgee Heritage Trail Complete
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With the newest expansion of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail complete, local leaders say they’re one step closer to creating one of the largest river trails in the state of Georgia.
The half mile stretch runs through Riverside Cemetery toward Amerson River Park. The newest addition has been in the works since 1998. The goal is to get people to see the history within the cemetery’s gates and encourage more foot traffic in the area.
“If they’re walking, they tend to smile of say ‘hello’ and make sort of an emotional connection,” said Chris Sheridan with the Ocmulgee Trail Executive Committee.
Funding for the long-awaited project was provided through a grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
