New Tubman Museum Begins Construction After Long Pause

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – After a nearly 10 years pause in construction, the Tubman Museum in downtown Macon is coming to life.

The new building will be huge, allowing the museum to display 5 times more art than it could before.

The building has been in the pre-construction phase for about a year, and the project will cost about 6 million dollars.

Executive Director of the Museum, Andy Ambrose, says everything’s going to be brand new, from the carpet, to the impact it will have on the community.

“We’re really looking at trying to create in many ways a new model for the museum, and its impact in the community,” said Ambrose. “And we’re relying on our partners and we’re relying on the investment the community has already made in this. And we want to make sure that, again, we make sure we give back in the way that they’ve given to us. We’re going to have exciting new exhibits, with expanded galleries, the space that we didn’t have in our old museum.”

Ambrose went on to say the construction team came mostly from local companies–helping Middle Georgia’s economy.

He’s hoping the project is complete in the Spring of 2015.
