MACON, Georgia – 41NBC/WMGT) – A new project will help improve the visitor experience at the Cherry Blossom Festival. Earlier this week, Macon-Bibb County Commissioners approved a $140,000 contract bid to improve Walnut Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Carolyn Crayton Park.
The project will bring a new parking lot where the old batting cages were located across from the park entrance. Plans include a new drainage system, bike trails, sidewalks and traffic patterns. The bike path will connect Walnut Street to the Pleasant Hill Pathway.
Hannah Theus with the Cherry Blossom Festival says they’re excited for the project.
“Thousands of people join us those 10 days,” she said. “Last year, we had a $6.1 million in economic impact over 10 days. We’re bringing people to downtown Macon, and we appreciate Macon-Bibb with all they’re doing to help us with that.”
Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller said they can replenish construction funds through the next SPLOST.
