New Day Center to Help Houston County’s Homeless Families
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – From the outside it looks like a typical home on McArthur Boulevard, but by this Mother’s Day, its four walls will serve as a hub for the homeless in Houston County.
Family Promise is a national non-profit organization that uses churches and community members to provide shelter and support for homeless families. On Wednesday, the network opened its first homeless day center in Warner Robins.
The group collaborates with 14 local churches, who provide the families a place to stay. At night, the different churches will offer a place to sleep and during the day, the center will provide classes and career building opportunities to help the families, of all kinds, get back on their feet.
“It can be families of various make ups,” said Family Promise of Houston County Network Director Nicole Rosser, “if it’s a single dad, if it’s a mom and a dad, if it’s a grandmother who has her grandchildren, we’re able to support all of those needs.”
Families must have children and meet a set of requirements to be eligible for the services. Program directors are working closely with churches, the community and the Houston County school system to identify families that would be a good fit for the home.
