BONAIRE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new water tower in Bonaire is now helping Houston County keep up with rapid growth.

The $6.4 million project was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act and is already making a difference in the county’s water system.

Houston County Board of Commissioners Chairman Dan Perdue says increasing demand over the last decade pushed the system to its limits, especially during peak usage times.

“On our peak days, many of our water tanks were getting low,” he said. “And so our pumps were running 23 and a half, 23, 22 and a half hours a day, and so with this tank gives us a lot more storage it allows some relief in those other tanks,” Perdue said.

Perdue says the new water tank adds critical storage, helping stabilize water levels and reduce strain on infrastructure.

He says the added capacity is also improving public safety.

Houston County Fire Chief Christopher Stoner says low water levels were a concern in the past, especially during emergencies.

“During the summer months we’ve been struggling to ensure there’s enough water for fire protection and just for regular consumption here in Bonaire, and this tank solidifies our position that we’re gonna have enough water now,” Stoner said.

Now, with more than a million gallons of added capacity, Perdue says those concerns are easing.

“This tank adds not just to public infrastructure but it also adds to public safety and helps us be more capable in our fire system,” Perdue said.

Perdue says the new water tank is a key investment as the county continues to grow, improving both reliability and safety for residents.
