New affordable housing, health center completed in Macon after 10-year journey
The Central City Apartments and the Phil and Alice Sheridan Health Center in Macon have finally been completed.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Central City Apartments and the Phil and Alice Sheridan Health Center in Macon have finally been completed. Both buildings were blessed in front of the Daybreak Day Resource Center on Monday, and a sheltering statue was was also placed and blessed.
“Today is a dream come true,” DePaul USA Macon Director Theresa Sullivan said. “Every day I meet people that need medical care, that need housing, and we put Band-Aids on. Today is a day we have sustainable solutions.”
Next month, people in Macon will have a place to call home thanks to the affordable housing. The new mixed-income apartments will house a total of 82 units, with 16 of them being fully furnished and reserved for the homeless.
The remaining units will be open for those just looking for affordable housing.
“The rest of them will be people that 80% of the median income, people who are working downtown who can’t afford to live downtown, so these will be affordable rates for people who are making 14, 15 $16 an hour,” Sullivan said.
The Sheridan Health Center will feature a 12-bed medical respite and an expanded free health clinic, which is expected to open in July.
Sullivan says the center will be a place for people who need help after they leave the hospital.
“So this will be a place for people to further recover and hopefully not only get better, but get into housing to prevent what happened in the first place,” she said.
Sullivan acknowledged the collaborative effort that made the project possible.
“So many times the communities across the United States will say, ‘We can’t end homelessness,’ or, ‘You can’t have affordable housing for everybody,'” she said. “What I love about Macon is Macon has said, ‘That’s not true.’ And we are one piece of the pie of working on addressing the issues of poverty and homelessness.
Cost for these apartments will depend on where your income falls in the application process.
