Netflix film “Hillbilly Elegy” starts filming in downtown Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Parts of downtown Macon are being used as the backdrop for a Netflix movie. As Macon attracts more movies, the film commission is doing all it can to get residents and businesses involved.
Streets in parts of downtown Macon are filled with extras and filming crews. Locations throughout downtown, and even Rutland High School, are scenes for the Netflix movie, “Hillbilly Elegy,” starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams.
Detours and closed streets may be a pain for commuters, but it’s an incentive for local businesses.
This is Macon’s fourth film within a year. Macon Film Commissioner Aaron Buzza says as Macon stays on production company’s radars, he’s asking for more local vendors and suppliers.
“Beyond the permit fees you see hotel rooms and there are local vendors that are being used. There are things that are being purchased through local stores and local suppliers. We’re doing our best to get our arms around local impact,” he said.
Although Netflix hired its own caterers and transportation, Buzza says Netflix asked for local extras.
“If there’s a company that says, ‘Yes we can provide sanitation or food service,’ we’d love to have that available and that information we can share with the film,” Buzza said.
Buzza says local vendors or suppliers interested in being involved in a future film should contact the Macon Film Commission.
