MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — As the Bird Flu outbreak continues across the country, many consumers are asking the same question: Is it safe to eat eggs and chicken?

41NBC spoke with Michael Hokanson, the Public Information Officer with North Central Health District, to give us some clarity on the rising concern. Hokanson reassured the public that it’s safe to eat eggs and chicken, provided they are prepared correctly.

“It is safe to eat eggs. It is safe to eat chicken,” he said. “The highest recommendations, of course, are to prepare them appropriately. Don’t eat anything raw. Don’t drink raw milk. Don’t eat raw chicken. Of course, that also puts you at risk for salmonella as well.

Hokanson says the risk of contamination for everyday consumers is low, but those who work closely with poultry are at a higher risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are currently no confirmed cases of bird flu in humans in Georgia.

Symptoms of Bird Flu are similar to the regular flu, including fever, cough, and body aches. If anyone is feeling unwell, Hokanson says you should visit your healthcare provider for testing,

Although there is no specific treatment for the Bird Flu, health officials say rest is key. Hokanson also said a regular flu shot does not provide protection against Bird Flu.

“If you see a dead or dying animal, do not touch it or play with any dead bird that you see,” he said.

On Monday, the Georgia Department of Agriculture lifted a suspension on poultry activities after cases of Bird Flu were confirmed in Elbert County.
