NAACP speak out about Ferguson case during prayer vigil for Michael Brown
Recently, a St. Louis County grand jury, did not indite Wilson for shooting and killing 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was unarmed.
Organizers say the prayer vigil was to show solidarity.
More than 25 people came out for the prayer vigil at the federal courthouse on Mulberry Street. They sang songs and prayed for love, as well as peace.
Macon-Bibb County President, Gwen Westbrooks, Bibb County Sheriff, David Davis and Macon-Bibb County Commissioner , Elaine Lucas addressed the crowd.
Westbrooks told the crowd some people need to learn to comply when they are stopped by law enforcement.
“We’re hoping that this event will bring our community together. There is some mistrust in our community of law enforcement,” said Westbrooks.
Westbrooks says racial profiling does exist and that laws need to be changed in Georgia. she encouraged people to help change those laws by voting.
Sheriff Davis says he does not understand the jury’s decision not to indict Darren Wilson, but adds that he believes the judicial system does work. He said the bibb county sheriff’s office works to build relationships in the community.
Davis admitted he’s heard about “the talk” minority parents have with their children concerning law enforcement.
“Me as a white guy it’s sort of foreign to me,” said Davis. “But I can understand, with the history of the relationship sometimes between law enforcement and the community. That they may feel like they need to have that talk.”
Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Elaine Lucas told the crowd it is wrong and it makes no sense to burn or destroy any community. She said people will stand in long lines for “Black Friday” but not to vote.
