MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Due to multiple accidents on popular bus routes, the Macon-Bibb Transit Authority (MTA) is making changes to some of its routes effective immediately.

According to MTA, all buses that use Poplar Street will shift one block south to Plum Street. Changes are also coming Monday, April 15th, to Mulberry Street.

The Chief Operating Officer of MTA, Tony Woodard, says these two areas have been highlighted as danger zones.

“People will illegally park vehicles while they run into a store on Mulberry Street. It’s an occurrence that happens pretty frequently. And so our buses are just not able to maneuver through the two lanes as we try to do a slalom curve through parked cars,” said Woodard.

MTA believes the change will be a positive move for everyone.

“When we get rear-ended or hit from the side, it’s the driving public. And so if we can get out of their way, hopefully it’ll benefit them as well,” explained Woodard.

He blames distracted driving as part of the issues, but also more people who have moving to Macon, and not knowing the area.

“I would like to plead and beg the driving public to be careful around our buses,” said Woodard.
