MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mount de Sales Academy is celebrating 150 years in Macon.

The school has been a part of the Macon community since 1876.

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, the school began as an all girls boarding school and now serves students in grades six through twelve.

Mount de Sales President Brendan O’Kane says reaching 150 years did not happen by chance.

“Faith and courage,” O’Kane said. “So if you look at the history of the school, those two words really, I think, summarize who we are. We had faith, the sisters had faith to start, and then the courage that they had to make the right choices. And that people have made the right choices over our career.”

Many people who have graduated from the school often return to become part of the staff.

Robert Ochieng graduated in 2011 and is now in his seventh year teaching at the school. Ochieng says he wants to make sure his students have the tools to succeed.

“Making sure that you leave here with a good head on your shoulder, and also just putting people first, not just always yourself,” Ochieng said. “I think it is a great responsibility especially as an alum to continue the legacy that’s been around for 150 years.”

Saturday’s Founder’s Day celebration will feature live music, fine arts and athletic exhibits, historical displays and a proclamation from Lester Miller.

O’Kane, who is in his second year as president of the school, says the school’s foundation continues to guide them into the future.

“Really what we want is our students to graduate and know that their lives are not just about themselves, their lives are to serve others, to give God glory, and to be of help to the wider community,” he said.
