Morning Report: Why workers aren’t using vacation days

Fear of falling behind and the availability of remote work are leading many Americans to skip out on paid time off. Only 48% of U.S. Workers say they use all their vacation days, according to a new survey from Pew Research Center. Private sector employees in the U.S. get an average of 15 vacation days after they’ve been working for five years. That number rises to 20 days after two decades on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Bed Bath & Beyond shares hit a record low after another bankruptcy warning. The company says that so it has raised $360 million through a complex deal, repaid its loan defaults and made all interest payments on debt.

Low-wage workers made gains in the last few years. Earnings grew 9% between 2019 and 2022, according to a recent report by the Economic Policy Institute. Workers earned $12.57 per hour in 2022, or $26 thousand annually.

Beverage brands rely on skinny cans to draw in consumers. They’re counting on a new slew of skinny aluminum cans to subtly signal to consumers that their exotic new drinks are healthier than the beer and sodas in the short, round cans.
