Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reports drowning in Ocmulgee River

Witnesses told deputies that a person had disappeared while swimming from a shallow sand bar back to the boat ramp.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says a person drowned in the Ocmulgee River at Popes Ferry boat ramp on Sunday.

Deputies responded to a missing person call at 9:05 p.m. on Sunday at Popes Ferry boat ramp, located off GA Highway 87.

Witnesses told deputies that a person had disappeared while swimming from a shallow sand bar back to the boat ramp. Witnesses attempted to find the swimmer, but were unsuccessful.

The body of the missing swimmer was found at 11:50 p.m.

The victim has been identified as Martin Eduardo Martinez Jimenez. This case is still under investigation.
