Monroe County man charged with aggravated assault after shooting incident

The sheriff’s office said its SERT team executed an arrest warrant around 4:33 p.m. at a home on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The warrant stemmed from an incident Sunday, September 20.

Investigators said the victim was visiting the home when he attempted to intervene in a physical altercation between the homeowner and a relative.

The homeowner, identified as Bentavious Tolen, allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim and fired a shot. The bullet missed the victim but struck the driver’s-side mirror of a vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Tolen allegedly fired a second shot, striking the lower driver’s-side door panel.

Tolen was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault. He is being held without bond.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the sheriff’s office said additional charges could be filed.
