Holiday travel surge brings heavy traffic through Georgia, local sheriff urges drivers to slow down
With more than 122 million Americans expected to travel, Monroe County ramps up patrols and warns drivers to stay alert and avoid distractions.

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- AAA says more than 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday season. Heavy traffic is expected nationwide — including through Monroe County.
Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman said this could be one of the busiest travel periods yet.
“Pretty heavy,” Freeman said. “From what I understand, it’s going to be one of the busier holiday seasons.”
Congestion is common in Monroe County. It often builds near I-75 and I-475, and in areas where lanes narrow.
With travel increasing, deputies are putting more focus on safety. Freeman urged drivers to slow down and avoid distractions.
“We want you to get to where you are going safely,” he said. “Just slow down, and put the cell phone down, and you’ll do alright.”
To help manage the holiday rush, the sheriff’s office has doubled its patrol units. Deputies will also watch closely for impaired driving.
David Young and his family are driving from Illinois to Universal Studios in Florida. He said drivers should be aware of families traveling with children.
“Drive safe, be aware, drink less fluids,” Young said. “Just be mindful it’s kids traveling. Be in the spirit, because sometimes you are the only spirit people see.”
Deputies say their goal is simple: help everyone reach their holiday destination safely.
