Monroe County Cleans Up Severe Storm Damage

Several Middle Georgians had their lives turned upside down in just a matter of minutes.

Early Thursday morning tractor trailers were blown off the interstate,
trees came crashing down, and homes were ripped apart.

Steve Landers was knee high in mud, while trying to salvage what was left of his son’s house.

“I don’t know. It’s one of those things where you get scared and you say a few words that I won’t repeat and you get out of the car and you go to work.”

Alongside him were many relatives and neighbors helping to clean up what the storm left behind.

Monroe County Sergeant Ricky Davis said it’s been a whirlwind.

“There’s limbs and trees and things like that torn up all over the area, as far as the extent of the damages this is probably the worst I’ve seen.”

A three bedroom, two bath home that was once located at 901 Weldon Road is now destroyed. Others in the area are now without roofs. Joseph Wilson woke up to his 33-foot camper upside down, with his father inside.

“I almost lost my dad.”

Kathy Mercer says all that’s been lost can be replaced. She plans to rebuild and stay in Forsyth.

The National Weather Service has said that the tornado was an F2 on the Fujita Tornado Intensity Scale with sustained winds of 130 mph.
