Mom to Mom: Helping to keep your kids calm

(41NBC/WMGT) — Are your kids feeling overwhelmed at home with big emotions? Today on Mom to Mom, we’ve got the perfect trick to help out with that. Today, we are creating a calm down space.

Now this idea of a calm down space is used in schools, it works best when your little ones are having those big emotions, when you start to see them get a little upset and frustrated, and it could be over the smallest things. Once you see that happening, you can take them to their calm corner and work through the emotions. This will take time to work with your kids. It’s not just going to happen overnight.

So some of the things that you might want to put in your calming bin could be a sensory item, something that would just help them get those emotions out. You could also hang up things like posters that talk about emotions to help them understand and put words to the things they’re feeling. Another thing you want to work with are books about feelings and emotions. So you can actually read the book with the child to help them work through those unhappy, angry feelings that they might be going through. You want to find a nice calming area in your house. And once you’ve established this with your little one, it becomes easier and easier for you to just leave them alone to do their own little thing with their calming corner.
