Millions Collected During First Month of TSPLOST
ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Nearly $9 million dollars in the one cent penny sales tax were collected last month.
According to a news release from the Georgia Department of Transportation, $8,797,555 were collected in three regions in January: the Central Savannah River, River Valley, and Heart of Georgia-Altamaha. These three regions passed the TSPLOST last summer. Money raised from the 10-year, one-percent sales tax will be used to improve local transportation projects.
The Middle Georgia-Altamaha region, which includes Bleckley, Laurens, Dodge, Wheeler, Wilcox, Truetlen, Johnson, and Telfair counties, raised $1,855,693.
GDOT says preliminary project work is already underway and department officials expect construction to begin on the first regional projects by this summer.
