Milledgeville step-father arrested after shooting daughter

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Baldwin County man is in jail, after he told detectives he accidentally shot his 13-year-old step-daughter, that is according to Capt. Brad King with the sheriff’s office.

Dwayne Ballard is charged with reckless conduct, cruelty to children, simple battery and probation violation.

The shooting happened Sunday on Lynton Road in Millegedville after an argument between Ballard and the teen.

“The mother, step-father and the daughter were arguing. The daughter went to her bedroom and was holding the door shut,” explained King.

King added Ballard has a permit to carry a gun.

“He said he was removing the gun to secure it when it accidentally discharged,” continued King. “ The evidence at the scene shows that the bullet did travel from waist high, steep, toward the floor. The bullet went through the door and struck the girl in the ankle.”

Ballard took the girl to Oconee Regional Hospital for treatment.
