Milledgeville Police HEAT Program Targets Speeders & Distracted Drivers

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Milledgeville police are cracking down on speeders and distracted drivers.

The police department kicked off its first ever HEAT summer program which targets four area throughout the city over the next 120. MPD picked the locations based on crash data and community complaints.

This month officers are focusing on North Columbia Road. The speed trailer is out and clocking how fast drivers are going. For the first 12 days, officers are giving out warnings but then they’ll be handing out tickets.

“We just want everybody to be safe. We want everybody to pay attention, watch what you’re doing,” Sgt. Thomas Smith said. “Don’t speed, in the end it’s just not worth it.”

Police are also handing out safe driving information to the community. Smith isn’t saying where the other three locations are yet, but officers will give drivers a head’s up before they set up their speed traps.
