Milledgeville Mayor and Council propose Ethics Code amendment

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Mayor and Council want to appoint someone to review the ethics complaints filed against council members.

The amendment would allow council members, with the City Attorney’s recommendation, to appoint a “special master” to review the allegations.

The proposal says that person must be an attorney, judge, or retired judge residing outside of Baldwin County.

Tripper Cook is a member of the Concerned Citizens of Milledgeville. He believes the proposed amendment gives the City’s Board of Aldermen an unfair advantage.

He feels the council needs to be more transparent as well. He said the original agenda for last week’s closed session did not mention the amendment. He recalled they added it to the agenda after the closed session.

Iva Griffin, a Milledgeville citizen not affiliated with the Concerned Citizens group, doesn’t see a problem with the proposal. She adds this issue has gone on long enough.

“I’m just ready to see it all over with, put it behind us, and let this city go forward like it’s been going,” said Griffin.

Councilman Walter Reynolds wants the judge requirements to be more specific. He would prefer only appointing a Superior Court Judge.

We’re told council will vote on the proposed amendment at their meeting Tuesday night.
