Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. Unification Put On Hold
MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The much talked about unification between the Milledgeville and Baldwin County governments will have to wait–for now.
Tuesday night, city council members prepared to vote to send the proposed charter to state officials for approval.
However, Mayor Richard Bentley announced a change of plans.
Because of weather delays and a shortened state legislative session, officials let him know there would be no reason to vote.
The unification could never make it to the ballot.
The mayor said it was a matter of doing all the necessary paperwork in time so that it could be voted on.
“We certainly understand the extenuating circumstances that caused it.,” said Milledgeville Mayor Richard Bentley. “The delay we had two weeks ago because of the snow is the same delay that officials in Atlanta had.”
In the future, a committee made up of government officials and community members will be formed to continue to examine the charter.
The mayor said this was a good thing for Baldwin and Milledgeville.
He thought the delay gave more time to think about such an important decision.
