Middle Georgians Getting A Head Start on Christmas

BYRON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A few middle Georgia families are pushing Thanksgiving back a bit, and getting a head start on Christmas.

Not for Black Friday, but for Christmas trees.

Randy Matthews and his family decided they’ll get to Thanksgiving a little later on in the day.

First they have to decide on a Christmas tree, it’s a tradition they’ve doing for the last 20 years.

“It’s Christmas card material and now we’re going to do Thanksgiving,” Matthews said.

Normally, the Matthews family goes tree shopping the day after Thanksgiving, but as their family continues to grow they wanted to get it done early.

“Because it’s hard the older they get, to get them all together at the same place at the same time, this is our one shot at it,” Matthews said.

Eddie Roberts is the owner of Roberts Christmas Tree Farm in Byron.

He says since they opened the farm last week, shoppers have been racing to get the best tree.

“We try to have different types of trees so people can pick and choose whatever they want,” Roberts said.

Over 35 acres of Christmas trees take up the farm, and for Randy and his family, it’s the opportunity to build lasting memories for years to come.

“Oh it’s the photos looking back years later, and the growth. It’s been a tradition so we have to make it happen every year,” Matthews said.
