Middle Georgia Groups Rally to Protest Immigration Bill

ATLANTA- Activist groups rallied today at the Georgia Capitol building to protest proposed immigration laws.

Thousands of people traveled to downtown Atlanta for the rally, including students, religious leaders and people from around the state.

Several Middle Georgia groups also traveled to the Capitol today by bus.

The groups say immigration legislation proposed by state Rep. Matt Ramsey and state Sen. Jack Murphy, both Republicans, would harm Georgia’s economy and lead to racial profiling. They are calling on Gov. Nathan Deal to commit to vetoing those bills.

Supporters of the legislation say the bills, which include some provisions similar to a tough law enacted last year in Arizona, are necessary to fight illegal immigration in Georgia since the federal government hasn’t solved the problem.

We have a crew at the rally today, and we’ll have a look at the issue tonight on 41 NBC News.
