Middle Georgia Celebrates National Stroke Awareness Month

Local health professionals are celebrating National Stroke Awareness Month by educating the public on the devastating effects of strokes. Today people at Central Georgia Rehabilitation Hospital learned what it is like to walk in a survivors shoes.

“It’s really heavy and diffifult,” says Dr. Shantel King-Whitby, Central Georgia Rehabilitation Hospital.

She put a weight on her leg to simulate the lack of motion in their extremeties stroke survivors may lose. This is just one motor skill that can be affected after suffering a stroke.

“I couldn’t talk at all, and now I can,” says Thomas Miller, survivor.

People participating in the simulation event also experienced blurred vision, impaired speech, and difficulty swallowing.
